How to Find Licensed Treatment

Find quality addiction treatment step by step with SAMHSA's findtreatment.gov locator, plus a checklist for vetting a licensed, accredited program.

Updated

A little homework goes a long way before you commit to a program. The free tools and checklist below help you find licensed, reputable care - and spot the warning signs of a program to avoid.

Step 1 - Start with a trusted locator

  • Search findtreatment.gov - SAMHSA’s free, confidential directory of licensed programs. Filter by location, services, payment options, and level of care.
  • Or call the SAMHSA National Helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357) for free, confidential referrals 24/7.

Step 2 - Vet the program (checklist)

  • State licensing - confirm the program is licensed by the state substance-abuse agency.
  • Accreditation - look for CARF or The Joint Commission accreditation.
  • Evidence-based care - therapies such as CBT and, for opioid or alcohol use, medication-assisted treatment (MAT).
  • Qualified staff - licensed clinicians and, where appropriate, medical supervision.
  • Levels of care - does it offer the right level (detox, inpatient, outpatient) and a plan to step down safely?
  • Cost and insurance - clear, written pricing and what your insurance covers.
  • Aftercare - ongoing support and relapse-prevention planning.

Step 3 - Watch for red flags

Be cautious of programs that guarantee a cure, pressure you to enroll immediately, are vague about licensing or cost, or offer to pay for your travel in exchange for enrolling - a practice known as patient brokering.

How do I know if a program is legitimate?
